In my work as a career coach and counsellor, I often meet people who are deeply unhappy in their current roles — yet still can’t bring themselves to resign, retire, or make a shift.
They’ll say things like:
🗣️ “It’s not that bad.”
🗣️ “I’ve been here so long, I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
🗣️ “Maybe next year…”
These individuals aren’t lazy.
They’re not incapable of making decisions.
They’re simply… stuck.
Or more precisely, unwilling to decide — because doing so would mean stepping into the unknown, risking change, or possibly disappointing others.
But here’s the truth:
Not deciding is still a decision.
Silence is still a response.
And avoidance always comes with a cost — one that often shows up in your mental health, stress levels, and overall wellbeing.
If you’ve ever been stuck in this loop — or know someone who’s been circling the same “Should I?” for years — please know this:
You’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out alone, either.
